Highlight On: Deadpool
He’s one of the biggest fans of Deadpool I know, so you’d think when I gave Murs47 a chance to highlight his fave character, he’d have tons to say, right? Obviously you, and I, overestimated him.
. Anyway, see what Murs47 has to say about some of the recent developments on Deadpool, how he feels about Daniel Way, and the petition to get Ryan Sohmers on the book. Oh, and you can find links to some Deadpool skins and meshes after the tag. Enjoy!
1. Marvel has just recently begun to push Deadpool into the spotlight a little more often. Why do you think this is, and do you think he’s finally on his way to being an A-list mercenary?
Yes, Marvel is pushing Senor Pool along with the idea of making him an A-lister. This is evident by the announcement of the solo film. Also, the introduction of multiple mini-series and a reboot of the Deadpool ongoing are other indicators. Not to mention the new Deadpool camping attire line-up.
2. What is it that you find enduring about Deadpool’s character?
His internal conflict with morality has always been an interesting aspect of Wade, but ultimately, his stupidity is what keeps fans coming back for more.
3. Deadpool has had many people attempt to honor his creative voice. What are some runs you think capture his true essence as a character?
Gail Simone’s short run on Deadpool as well as her run on Agent X jump to mind first. I thought she created a serious plot with a bunch silliness…’twas perfect. The first three arcs of Cable & Deadpool are also “classic” Wade in my opinion. Finally, the back end of Cable & Deadpool was also memorable once Reilly Brown came aboard to share writing duties with Nicieza. I feel Nicieza really lost his touch about 20 issues into the series. While I know the average Deadpool fan has a hard-on for Joe Kelly’s run, I feel it comes in 2nd place to Nicieza’s.
4. XML2 and MUA helped to show Deadpool to a more widespread fan base. Do you think he’s a character that can maintain a whole game alone or with a small supporting cast?
Easily with a supporting cast, if not solo. He’s got weapons, gadgets, jokes, and healing powers. I think an espionage/action/adventure game would be pretty awesome. Something like a comedic Metal Gear or so.
5. As a character, Deadpool has been submitted to an array of wacky situations. Are there any situations you don’t think the character can handle?
Whenever he’s the last line of defense or hope. I mean, how the heck can Wade Wilson be that? He’s an idiot, he should be the first one incapacitated.
6. Deadpool is said to be a “Marvel-clone” of Deathstroke. Do you believe this to be true or is Deadpool different enough to be considered his own creation?
I believe this is factual. A shot at DC for something they had done to the creator (No, not God. Deadpool’s creators.) Funny how the rip-off became more popular than the original.
7. Deadpool typically struggles between being a hero and a mercenary. Which path do you think is correct for the character?
Both, other than his lack of brain cells, his struggle between the two is what makes him interesting. If he were to ever actually choose, I’d say the hero. Wade works well with a team from an entertainment standpoint. His actual teamwork is questionable.
8. Daniel Way, the current writer of Deadpool, makes heavy use of Deadpool talking to his many personas. Do you think this is a activity that can last long term or is it just a current ploy to make up for the lack of a supporting cast?
It can work, but like the rest of Way’s ideas, they lack proper execution.
9. Bob was a fan-favorite that hopped out of the final few issues of Cable and Deadpool. Can Bob be considered a viable character by his own standards or is he forever in DP’s shadow?
He does not work without Deadpool. He’s more of a material source for Wade to work with.
10. Deadpool and Cable have quite a history together. If Cable (and Bob) weren’t in the picture, who would you think would be the perfect “straight man” for Deadpool’s antics?
Reed Richards. The smartest man in the world teamed with the dumbest. It’s like Pinky and the Brain all over again…’cept better.
11. Recently, there has been a Thunderbolts/Deadpool crossover. Would you consider it a worthy read or completely passable?
I keep it in my bathroom in case I run out of toilet paper.
12. What is one character or team you would love to see Deadpool interact with?
Dr. Doom. He would become easily frustrated with Deadpool but could never kill him.
13. There is some footage of Deadpool in MUA2. How do you feel about his portrayal so far?
Has the word “bad-assery” been included in the dictionary yet? If not, Webster needs to get on that ASAP ’cause that’s exactly what it was.
14. There’s a petition on the internet to get Ryan Sohmers on a Deadpool book. Who do you think would be a great Deadpool writer?
Ryan Sohmers, no. Not ever. I’d honestly like to see Kevin Smith or Brian K. Vaughn give a Deadpool a shot from the big name list. The title would always be delayed, but I think those two could pull off something memorable. From the unknown list, I think Kris Wilson of the infamous Cyanide and Happiness web comic found at explosm.net could pull off something very entertaining. Not sure it would go anywhere, but I’d probably be laughing my [intense expletive] ass off the whole way.
So there you have it. If you want to add Deadpool to your FF collection, you can go to these sites: Champions of Freedom, NPI, Murs47′s yahoo group, and you can find him and a bunch fo other characters in the mods: Crisis and Ultimate Trio (Comic Script)!
