Everyone loves an underdog. So, when I read what Marvel wanted to do post Secret Invasion I was pretty excited about the position it would put our heroes in. A villain becoming the director of the planet’s global security force certainly puts our heroes in a corner. Norman Osborn with absolute power = super-heroes dying, mutants being enslaved, or any other horrific act we can think of, right? No, it doesn’t. It means we’ll be reading about an underachieving psychopath that probably couldn’t put paper in a printer.
So what went wrong? First off, the simple decision of labeling this short era was a mistake. That in itself raises expectations dramatically. But more importantly was that there was no loss of hope for heroes overcoming this “Dark Reign”. Yeah Norman was legally in charge but he lost every single battle in every single title. He, his Thunderbolts, and Dark Avengers pretty much got beat up by Deadpool. Deadpool is in an idiot! How is he manhandling the planet’s best clandestine operation and its most dangerous operatives? How!
Marvel , what you had in your hand was a golden opportunity to put our heroes back to square one and make them the underdogs again. Instead, you failed. Nice job!
*sigh* At least Secret Warriors is awesome.

Forget the wackiness of Volume 1, it’s time for a whole new adventure. Wendy has successfully joined The Middle Man operation and has become his sidekick. Now, it’s time to train and obtain new information. What could possibly go wrong with that? Well, you should know by now never to ask that question. What could go wrong? How about having your sensei kidnapped by a gang of Mexican wrestlers seeking revenge? That’s not a normal thing is it? No, I didn’t think so.

Have you ever found yourself living in a world where things just seem out of the norm, and you’re the only one that notices? Well, what if you’re also completely un-shocked by the seemingly weird experiences, leaving one to believe that you had grown up with it and expected this sort of thing to happen more often than it actually does? No? You don’t have anything in your background that relates to the proposed hypothetical? That’s unfortunate, but it does give you a chance to live it vicariously through the eyes of Wendy, one of the main characters in Viper’s The Middle Man series written by Javier Grillo-Marxuach and penciled by Les McClaine. Can I just start out this review by saying that it’s nice when a company, especially a new one, honors its words right off the back. This is an anthology series featuring three stories by various writers, but if you know me, then you know that I believe that most recent anthologies are really iffy. But I’m going to take my bias out of the equation and be as fair as I possibly can be because it’s the right thing to do. Also, I should probably judge everyone on their own merits, right?

Hey…it’s another badly executed “event” by Mr Bendis…Just add it to his ever-growing list of “event” flops.
I really wasn’t expecting much from it, just as I wasn’t expecting much from Stupid Invasion (Marvel execs even warned us going in, that SI was just a lead-in to another bigger “event”).
Nearly all of these so-called “events” seem to pan out to feel like massive wastes of time and comic-buyer money. The only recent Marvel events that have borne any fruit are those of the cosmic sort…And Mr B has nothing to do with those…Interesting.
