5 Unlikely Songs that Remind You of Superheroes?
I don’t mention it much on the boards, but I have very eclectic tastes when it comes to music. Today, I’m going to list and link to at least 5 videos that remind me of superheroes (or in broader terms, comics) that aren’t actually about them. Sound fun? No? Well, read ahead anyway, dang it:
1) Mr. Jones – Alexz Johnson
Even though this particular song is more likely to be linked to a spy or detective, in the craziness that is my mind, I can see it applying to any superhero that happens to change their clothing in a phone booth and has a female reporter in their life that’s constantly trying to piece together who her super lover is. It can’t just be me, can it?
2) Devil Inside – Utada Hikaru
The most obvious correlation would be Angel of the X-men, right? Well, when I hear this song, I almost immediately connect it with Jean Grey/Marvel Girl and the confusion that surrounds her and the Phoenix Force. In fact, I actually partner this whole song with Morrison’s New X-men run and how Jean and Scott were portrayed during it. Call me crazy, but it works in my mind. Also, gotta love the guitar riffs in this version.
3) It’s Not Fair – Janelle Monae
Outside of the palpable answer as to why I chose this song, this one just really reminds me of the relationships many heroes seem to take on and endure during their, “no one can know my secret,” tenures. If we want a specific case, this song greatly embodies the many relationships of Peter Parker, and even more particularly, that of him and MJ… even after OMD. Probably more so if that event is taken into account.
4) How to Save a Life – The Fray
Not particularly a superhero relating song, but a human one. You know those issues… the one where the supers have to deal with real difficult issues like drugs, death, and diseases. I’m sure you can all come up with at least one instance where this song would fit a hero or two (Speedy, Captain Marvel, Harry Osborn)
5) Fashion is Danger – Flight of the Conchords
What an apropos way to end off this list. Not only has fashion been something that has been commonly talked about in the comic world, but so often, creators feel the need to revamp costumes, which brings out the hate in its fans (See: Wonder Woman). Well, my friend… you think you know fashion? Fashion is danger!
6) Afraid – Nelly Furtado (BONUS)
I know I said 5, but this musical contribution to the world of auditory is one that can apply to any hero, and heck, any person. “Be a leader, not a follower”? Check. “You wanna spread your wings but you’re not sure. Don’t wanna leave your comforts. Wanna find a cure.”? Check. How many vague super hero references do I need to make to link you to the association?
And that’s that. What do you guys think of the list? Good? Bad? OMGAH, you have such bad taste in music (hey, that’s subjective, yo!)? Meh, how about giving me some suggestions of your own as well? That’d be much appreciated.

I have a few songs.
First, Omegaman by the Police reminds me of the Omega Men by DC Comcis.
Ebony and Ivory reminds me of the Thing, because I was a big Marvel Two-In-One fan when that song came out.
Probably not what you were looking for, Prev, but there you go.

That’s a very fun idea, Prev.
The only song I remember now would be “Holding Out for a Hero”. The video have a western setting, but I always thought the lyrics sounded as a Lois Lane type waiting for her champion.

I totally see Utada Hikaru;s Devil Inside being the song of New X-Men.
I love that Fray song. It always makes me tear up.

Oh as for a song suggestion:
I’ve always thought Muse’s Butterflies and Hurricanes fit the first 12 issues of the Authority. The hard guitar riffs and big sound just always fit with the widescreen action.
Radiohead’s Everything Its Right Place always felt like Planetary to me. In fact everything from Kid A fits Planetary if you ask me.
The Killer’s cover of Why Don’t You Find Out For Yourself reminds me of all the stuff Peter Parker has gone through as Spider-man and how it impacts his personal life.
Young Avengers always reminds me of Scissor Sister’s first studio album – especially Return To Oz. The whole album could easily be about the Young Avengers’ life as teen heroes.

Argh! I have another one – Dirty Knife by Neko Case would be the perfect song for Sentry’s existence. I imagine the wolves as the Void tearing away at Bob’s psyche while the Woodsman would obviously be the Sentry persona.

Hmm….I’d have to say that Five Iron Frenzy’s “Cannon Ball” has always reminded me of heroes in general, that point where they just barrel through anything in their way, like in Justice, where Aquaman just rips through Manta’s men, etc.
That and….I suppose that “Hero” song from the first Spider-Man movie…and it…makes me…think of…Spider…Man? Err…I’m going to give up now.

I feel like cutting my wrists when I listen to these songs.

Cutting is a serious problem, Murs. If you need to talk about it… well, I’d probably cut your wrists for you, so… Hrm. And what songs do you have to offer? Participate!
I can’t believe this. You’re quite the virtuoso at tying Aquaman into any and every topic. He thanks you for the promotion.
Hrm. May have to check that out. I can put my dislike of Sentry to the side for a song or two.
That’s… a weird association for me. I think of Turk and JD… or Shawn and Gus. (Scrubs & Psych = great shows)

The first hero that pops to mind when I see/hear Kylie’s The One is Dazzler (I also happen to think of Northstar and Aurora)…

No particular hero ever came to mind when I listened to this song by Pat Benatar, but I do think it makes a great superhero song…
